Men of Oregon Track 2015 Will Not Disappoint
Ladies and gentlemen, the king is back. Edward Cheserek, the sophomore phenom for Robert Johnson’s Oregon Track & Field team, is already dominating the field and breaking records in his second indoor campaign. He has set a world-leading time of 7:43 in the 3000 meters and this past weekend set a school record 3:56.43 mile in the legendary Wanamaker Mile at the 108th Millrose Games.
King Ches will now set his sights on the NCAA Championships in March, where last year he won both the 3000 and 5000 meters. Should he be successful in his repeat attempts - although this year may feature a run at the 1500 title - Cheserek will build upon an already strong resume and continue his rise through the elite distance runners of the world. Should he continue to improve, and at only 20 years old this seems to be likely, this young man could build a legacy alongside the greats of Oregon past.
Cheserek hasn’t been the only standout for this loaded Ducks' team. Eric Jenkins has been instrumental for Oregon thus far, finishing second to Cheserek at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this fall. He won the 3000 meters at Millrose and fellow Duck Will Geoghegan finished second. Jenkin’s time of 7:44.91 is second all-time at Oregon and eighth-fastest in NCAA history, Geoghegan’s third for Oregon and ninth all-time in NCAA history.
The distance men of Oregon have long been home to some of the best runners, and teams, in the nation. This year’s edition is no different. With Cheserek and Co. at his disposal, Pac-12 Coach of the Year Robert Johnson is in prime position to repeat last year’s national team title in outdoor track and field.
